New designs for iconic cans are a big swig of scary

In the past few weeks, two major beverage brands, Diet Coke and Budweiser, have totally redesigned their cans. As a guy who has worked on many rebranding projects for clients much smaller than these, I feel the pain of the folks who were tasked with this job.

Redesigning anything is a lonely task, let alone the key packaging for two of the world’s most important brands. There has been lots of twitter/facebook/blogosphere chatter about both designs. Some positive, some negative. I applaud the effort and the end result for both. I’m not sure either can needed a drastic update, but I do dig both of them.

What do you guys think?

The coke can looks great. the Bud can is the problem, but it's not the can it's the awful fluid they put in it. The brand is just old and has not grown since Ronald Reagan was President.
